RT Thomas contractors is a family run business based in Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.  The present Managing Director, Rob Thomas, is the fourth generation of the Thomas family to have taken the reins over the years.  The next generation is already on board with son Gethin having recently joined the company as a Director

Mainly working across South Wales, their projects include both public and private  sector contracts.

As well as the company’s headquarters in Cowbridge, RT Contractors  have an operational office in Capel Hendre.  It was through one of their Carmarthenshire based partners that Alex Jones first came to the notice of the company.  Alex had secured a work placement through Trac on the Pride In Your Patch Initiative run in conjunction with Coleg Sir Gâr, Carmarthenshire County Council and local construction companies.

Heather Davies, Employment Account Executive at Trac explains “We had supported Alex in gaining his CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) which stood him in good stead to obtain employment.  When the original placement came to an end Alex was recommended to RT Contractors.”

Gethin Thomas continues the story. “We originally took Alex on as a general labourer.  He was very committed and enthusiastic and showed a real aptitude for the work.  We then offered him an apprenticeship as a plasterer. He has now been with us for over a year and doing very well”.

So well indeed that Alex recently received a Highly Commended Award  in the Apprentice of the Year category in The National Federation of Builders Awards held in London. Gethin and all at RT Contractors were obviously delighted at his success. The  presentation speech mentioned Alex’s “sheer determination and perseverance”  and  his “outstanding progression”  which resulted in his being nominated for this award.

“Trac have been very supportive  since taking on Alex.  Heather and the team are in regular contact with us, checking on his progress and making sure that both sides are happy” said Gethin.   It is thanks to Trac that Alex got his chance to show what he could do”.

Trac is working in partnership with Jobfit to deliver the work programme throughout Mid & West Wales on behalf of Job Centre Plus.
